Product Description

This exquisite sterling silver vesta case was crafted in Birmingham in 1894 by the renowned silversmiths Deakin & Francis. Measuring 5cm x 4cm, it features intricate hand-engraved foliate scrollwork surrounding a central cartouche, once intended for a monogram. The case is fitted with a hinged lid and striker to the base, serving as a functional and elegant accessory of the Victorian gentleman’s era. Vesta cases, also known as match safes, were essential for carrying matches safely before the widespread use of lighters.

Today, this ornate piece represents not only fine craftsmanship and practical design but also a tangible connection to late 19th-century social rituals and daily life.

Each piece in our collection carries the subtle marks of time, adding to its authenticity and charm. Any notable details are thoughtfully included in the description and imagery. Should you wish to see more, we are always happy to assist.

If this piece could talk, it would whisper of smoky Victorian parlours and candlelit dining rooms, where gentlemen once struck matches to light cigars after supper. Carried carefully within a waistcoat pocket, this silver vesta case would have accompanied its owner through journeys, gatherings and the rituals of everyday life during another era.

The vacant central cartouche hints at initials perhaps once intended to be engraved — a reminder that objects such as these were often deeply personal possessions, gifted, treasured and handled daily with quiet pride.

Today, it remains not only a beautiful example of antique silver craftsmanship, but also a reflection of a time when even the most practical objects were designed with elegance, refinement and enduring artistry.
