Full of character and wonderful detail, this Japanese ivory netsuke captures the commanding presence and personality of a traditional sumo wrestler.
Standing approximately 5 cm tall, the wrestler is depicted with a gently smiling expression, traditional topknot and generously modelled physique. Of particular note is his elaborate ceremonial apron, or kesho-mawashi, intricately carved with layered tassels, cords and decorative detailing. Subtle staining has been used throughout to accentuate the carving and bring definition to the costume and facial features.
Sumo wrestlers have long been represented in Japanese art, reflecting the sport's centuries-old traditions and its important place within Japanese culture. The compact proportions and expressive nature of the subject made the sumo wrestler particularly well suited to the art of netsuke carving.
