Product Description

Evoking a moonlit Japanese landscape, this beautiful 19th-century four-case inro is decorated in gold lacquer with grasses and flowers rising beneath a large golden moon — an elegant composition that rewards close inspection.

An inro was a small compartmented case traditionally worn suspended from the obi sash of a Japanese kimono. As traditional Japanese clothing had no pockets, inro provided a practical way to carry small personal items such as medicines and seals. Over time, they also became highly accomplished works of decorative art, with lacquer artists creating increasingly sophisticated designs for their owners.

This example comprises four fitted sections and is decorated in gold lacquer against a dark ground, with its moon, grasses and floral details continuing across the individual compartments. Dating to the 19th century, it measures approximately 7 cm x 5.3 cm and is a wonderful example of the artistry found in traditional Japanese personal accessories.

A fascinating piece for a collector of Japanese lacquerware, inro or netsuke, and a thoughtful gift for someone with an appreciation for Japanese art and craftsmanship.

Each piece in our collection carries the subtle marks of time, adding to its authenticity and charm. Any notable details are thoughtfully included in the description and imagery. Should you wish to see more, we are always happy to assist.
