An intriguing little piece of Japanese craftsmanship, this antique carved wood netsuke depicts a rat clambering over a traditional hand broom, transforming an everyday object into a wonderfully characterful miniature sculpture.
Finely carved in dark wood, the design captures the rat nestled against the textured broom, with careful attention given to the binding and individual elements of the broom itself. Measuring approximately 4.5 cm tall, the netsuke is signed on an inset ivory plaque.
Originally both practical and decorative, netsuke were used as toggles to secure small personal containers such as inro to the obi sash of a kimono. Over time, they developed into highly collectable miniature works of art, often depicting animals, folklore and scenes from everyday Japanese life.
