Product Description

Full of charm and symbolism, this antique Japanese ivory netsuke depicts a smiling woman beside two Daruma figures, creating a delightful scene rich in Japanese folklore and tradition. Beautifully carved and full of character, it is a wonderful example of the artistry for which Japanese netsuke are so highly regarded.

Standing approximately 4 cm high, the figure is finely hand carved with expressive facial features and delicate detail. She holds a bowl while accompanied by two Daruma figures—one seated and the other reclining—adding both visual interest and cultural significance to the composition.

Daruma are traditional Japanese talismans inspired by Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. They are widely regarded as symbols of perseverance, resilience, good fortune and the achievement of personal goals, making them among the most recognisable and meaningful figures in Japanese culture.

Originally created as practical toggles worn with the traditional kimono, netsuke evolved into highly collectible miniature works of art. This delightful example combines exceptional craftsmanship with a subject deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, making it a wonderful addition to any collection of Japanese carvings.
