Product Description
This impressive vintage cap-firing toy is a superb example of post-war British toy manufacture, produced by Mettoy and also associated with the licensed Mattel-O-Matic branding of the period. Designed as a cap-firing toy only, it was intended to create sound and visual effect rather than fire any projectiles, reflecting the mechanical ingenuity and imaginative play that defined mid-20th-century childhood. The toy measures approximately 41 cm in length and is mounted on an adjustable metal tripod, allowing it to be displayed in a variety of positions.
Constructed primarily of metal with a matte black finish, the piece demonstrates the durability and craftsmanship for which British toy makers were widely respected in the years following the war. It retains its original illustrated box, which provides valuable historical context through period graphics and descriptive text, offering insight into how toys of this scale and ambition were marketed to families at the time. The presence of the original box significantly enhances its collectability and display appeal.
The toy itself presents exceptionally well and appears unused. The original box shows age-related wear consistent with storage over time, including scuffing and edge wear, while remaining structurally intact and visually strong.
