Product Description

Some objects capture the refinement of an earlier age, and this exquisite Victorian card case is a beautiful example of the elegance once associated with the exchange of calling cards. Dating from approximately 1840–1870, the black lacquered case is richly decorated with gold gilt scrollwork and highly iridescent mother-of-pearl and abalone shell floral motifs.

Measuring approximately 10 × 8 cm, the case features a fitted hinged cover and a striking arrangement of flowers, fruit and decorative scrolls that shimmer in shades of turquoise, violet, pink and green as they catch the light. Minor age-related wear is present, consistent with its considerable age and delicate construction.

Due to the natural shell materials used in its decoration and the complexities of international customs regulations, this item is available for purchase within Australia only.

Each piece in our collection carries the subtle marks of time, adding to its authenticity and charm. Any notable details are thoughtfully included in the description and imagery. Should you wish to see more, we are always happy to assist.

If this piece could talk...

It might remember an elegant Victorian drawing room, where calling cards were exchanged as carefully as conversation and this richly decorated case was carried as a mark of refinement. More than a century later, its shimmering shell flowers and delicate gilt decoration still reflect the artistry of an age that found beauty in even the smallest details of everyday life.
