19th Century Japanese Ivory Rabbit Netsuke

With its rich honey patina and wonderfully expressive character, this 19th-century Japanese ivory rabbit netsuke has the unmistakable appeal of a piece that has been treasured and handled for generations.

Finely carved with long folded ears and delicately incised detailing, the rabbit displays historical handling wear consistent with its age and use. The underside is signed; however, the first two characters are worn, with the final character appearing to read “zan”, and no attribution to a particular carver has therefore been made.

The rabbit, or usagi, holds a special place in Japanese tradition as one of the twelve animals of the zodiac and is closely associated with the enduring folklore of the Moon Rabbit. Measuring approximately 3.5 cm x 2 cm, this charming example would make a wonderful addition to an established netsuke collection or an appealing piece for a new collector.
